On Saturday 3 December, 138 people came to Brockwell Lido in South London to take part in Icebreaker, the first in this year's event series.
Events bring supporters closer to the cause, and people are why we do what we do. To see over 100 people turn out ready to swim in 8.3 degree water in December was amazing. While the cold can be exhilarating, it's also so dangerous for people without a safe home to warm up in. Home isn't a privilege, it's a human right.
Registration desk was kept busy with a queue of people, while the Electric Belles choir serenaded us with Christmas songs. Some people went all out with fancy dress, while others got their game face on and aimed for the winning relay prize, treating the day like the Icebreaker Olympics. What was so obvious throughout the day was the shared joy, excitement and sense of achievement.
Some of our supporters put it into words:
I’m really into doing things for charity. I’m only going to be cold for a limited time – sadly that’s not everyone’s reality.
– Debbie
Just trying to give a little bit back. I can’t wait to get in – he who dares!
– Gary
We’re so proud of ourselves! We’re very cold but if it helps people, we’ll do it again next year.
– The Well Oaked Team
It was good fun and was a real talking point in our swimming club.
– Steph
I did it because my friend made me! It was fun! A really great challenge to help bring it home how cold it is.
– Vicki
I have homelessness in my family so it brings it back home. Lost for words – very cold!
– Jordan
I work near Oxford Street and I walk past 50 – 100 homeless people per day, so when the leaflet came through the door, I was pleased to do it. I’m glad I don’t have to do it every day.
– Jan
Did it for a challenge – I feel fab!
– Maggie
My friend signed me up. I love doing something different and to do anything I can for homelessness is amazing. I’d definitely do it again.
– Jack
That was horrendous but fun – something I’ve never done before but I’d do it again.
– Richard
Thank you to everyone who took part, supported the event and helped to organise it. Icebreaker is back at Parliament Hill on Saturday 14th January, so come and start the New Year in the most refreshing way possible! Or you can do your own cold water challenge wherever you are.
However you face the freeze, you'll join a community that works together to end homelessness.
