Crisis responds to Westminster Government's funding allocation for social housing through the Affordable Homes Programme

The Westminster Government has today, Tuesday 1 July, committed to spend at least 60% of the £39 billion allocated to the Affordable Housing Programme at the Spending Review on homes for social rent in England.

Overall, the Government has set an ambition to deliver around 300,000 new social and affordable homes through the Programme. They have said this would include delivering around 180,000 homes for social rent.

This announcement comes against the backdrop of rising homelessness, with over 126,000 households in temporary accommodation. There are now more than 1.3 million households on waiting lists for a social home.

Crisis, alongside many in the housing and homelessness sector, has long called for a step change in the delivery of social housing to end homelessness.

Matt Downie, Chief Executive of Crisis, said: “The Government’s commitment to use at least 60% of the £39 billion funding for the Affordable Homes Programme on homes for social rent is hugely positive. It recognises the transformative role social housing plays in communities, giving everyone the chance of a safe, secure home which is the foundation for a better future.

“Right now, there are record numbers of households in temporary accommodation, including more than 165,000 children. For too long people have been trapped in poverty and had their life chances restricted. The only way to break this cycle is by taking decisive action to deliver social housing as quickly as possible. We hope everyone who can play a part in achieving this steps up to the table.”
