Crisis clients get into catering
23.02.2016
Homeless people in London have been gaining new qualifications and skills at Crisis' Practical Catering classes.
The 20-week course equips clients with theoretical knowledge of the catering industry and practical skills: from filleting a fish or making fresh pasta, to planning and budgeting.
At the end of the course participants will have a chance to take an exam assessed by the British Institute of Innkeepers Awarding Body (BIIAB) leading to a level 2 qualification.
Clients take part in the class in the kitchens at the Café from Crisis. The course is a progression from the Essentials of Catering and Food Safety courses also offered by Crisis.
Veena Torchia, Manager of Accredited Learning at Crisis Skylight London, said: “We are thrilled to offer our clients this course, which can provide practical skills and a first step into paid employment in the Catering industry. Not only do our clients learn a host of food preparation techniques, they are also able to work together, gain communications skills and build confidence that can be so vital in helping them move out of homelessness for good.”
Andre, one of the members of the Catering class, said: “I’ve very much enjoyed the Catering classes. Ultimately I’m working towards a Practical Catering Award and I’m already planning to set up my own canapé business with help from Crisis’ Changing Lives grant scheme.”
