Silvester gives back to the charity that helped him out of homelessness
Last updated: 07.04.2026
When Silvester was forced into homelessness, Crisis was there for him. Now he’s giving back to the charity that helped him turn his life around and running the Hackney Half Marathon to raise money. We’ve asked him some questions to find out more about his story.
Crisis interviewer: Hi Silvester, thank you so much for choosing to raise money for Crisis. Could you tell us a little bit about why you chose Crisis?
Silvester: Crisis supported me through a very challenging period in my life. I was introduced to the Changing Lives Programme and was awarded grants to support both my course and my business. The support didn’t just stop there — they’ve continued to encourage and guide me. The turnaround in my life has been significant, and a large part of that is thanks to Crisis. This fundraiser is my way of giving back.
C: We’re so glad you benefitted so significantly from the support of our team. So tell us, how’s it all been going?
S: Physically, the aches and pains don’t always go away — training pushes you. Mentally, it’s a constant back and forth: do I push for a personal best, or do I focus on endurance and finishing strong? That internal dialogue is often the hardest part.
But I’m enjoying proving to myself that this transformation isn’t a fluke. I started running when I was released, and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve completed one official half marathon already and previously fundraised for GrowTH Homeless Charity through my barbering work with them. This time, I’m enjoying the discipline of training and using my platform to inspire others who may be rebuilding their lives.
C: It sounds like you’ve thrown yourself into the challenge and you’re getting a lot from it. What advice would you give to someone taking on a similar challenge?
S: Train consistently — hills, flat routes, treadmill sessions, and in all types of weather. You never know what conditions race day will bring, so preparation is key. During my last half marathon, I felt like quitting halfway through, but my training carried me to the finish line.
And make sure you get in touch with the fundraising team. They genuinely care and want to support you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or lean on them — you’re fighting the same cause together.
C: There’s some great advice there, Silvester! And finally, what are you most proud of?
S: I’m proud that I decided to take part in the first place. I’m proud that I can now use my story to support others navigating homelessness and show that progress is possible.
C: Thank you so much Silvester, for everything you are doing for Crisis and to help others like you. Good luck for the event!
